CHAPTER 17.
BLACKWATER HEIGHTS
âLook, this whole thing is crazy,â Hilary said, backing away. âYouâre trying to tell me that a scientist invented an ageing drug that was going to replace the penal system?â
âThatâs exactly what Jennifer did,â Perrin replied. âShe was working for the government, and when they eventually discovered what she was doing she was buried in an institution like many of our countryâs dirty little secrets.â
âHow long was she doing it?â Hilary couldnât help but ask, despite her more rational judgment.
âWell officially, of course, the government would deny that her programme ever existed, but she once told me that she managed to get to 37 prisoners responsible for the deaths of children.â
âAnd her own child?â
âOne of those unfortunate cases that were never solved. Her 4 year old daughter was snatched from her front garden while out playing one day and was never seen again.â
âThatâs awful.â
âEnough to drive a once brilliant doctor quite insane.â
âI can try and get you out of this cage and we can get away,â Hilary said, getting to her feet, determined to take action.
âItâs no good, Dr Meeker. Riggs keeps the keys on him at all times on a chain around his neck. It would be far too dangerous to tackle him head on.â
âWhat about the rest of the staff? Surely some people would help me once I told them?â
âBut at this point Iâve no idea who is a patient and whoâs not,â Perrin sighed. âRiggs will have surrounded himself by now with only those that he feels he can completely trust.â
âBut this is nuts, surely there must be an inspection planned? Surely there will be visitors who will uncover what heâs done?â
âWe were barely open before Riggs took over. Heâd obviously been planning this for some time before he arrived. Iâd imagine that heâs greeted a lot visitors by now who all accept that heâs me. Besides, our isolated location means that we are off the beaten track; itâs why our patients generally donât have relatives who visit. They are the abandoned, the lost and the lonely. Iâm afraid that Blackwater is largely a dumping ground for other facilities.â
âThere has to be something I can do?â Hilary snapped exasperatedly.
âYou can be careful, my dear, thatâs first and foremost. Watch Riggs like a hawk but never forget that heâs a very intelligent and dangerous man. Never think that you can get the best of him, no matter how innocently he acts; trust me, he sees everything. You have to watch and wait for the perfect moment. Anything else and you will be in a cage alongside me, or worse. I wouldnât put it past Riggs to turn an attractive young woman such as yourself over to some of the patients who would do terrible things to you when unleashing their pent up desires.â
âBut I canât just leave you here like this.â
âIâm afraid that you must.â Perrin smiled bravely as he sighed. âEven if you could get me out of this cell then where would we go and how would we get there?â
âI have a car.
